There's more to the equation than calories in versus calories out

Most of us have taken a basic health class in high school/grammar school/college/etc. One of the basic building blocks of the class was to record an average daily caloric intake. Then from these numbers you could break down your intake vs. what you "should" intake. Simple math equations have been posted on several well known websites (daily caloric needs calculator) . Basically the objective your teacher was trying to say was "based on your body type, you should be eating 'x' amount of calories to maintain your weight. Person 'A' is eating 3000 calories per day, and that is 500 more than their need, so they will gain weight. If you want to lose weight, simply cut out 500+ calories or workout enough to burn the same."
