Weight-loss surgery can eradicate the symptoms of type 2 diabetes in almost eight out of 10 patients undergoing the operation, a large-scale study has found.
More saw at least some improvement in their condition, the research, which reviewed more than 135,000 cases shows.
More than 2.5 million people in Britain suffer from Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
The condition can be triggered by obesity and the number of cases to expected rise dramatically in coming decades as the population becomes heavier.
The number of people having weight-loss operations on the NHS has risen by more than 50 per cent in the last year, to 4,324, and Anne Diamond and Fern Britton, the television presenters, are among those who have admitted undergoing the procedures.
Surgery, including to staple the stomach, helped 78.1 per cent of patients experience “complete resolution” of their diabetes for at least two years after the operation, the findings show.
In total, 86.6 per cent saw at least some improvement, according to the study, led by Dr Henry Buchwald, from the University of Minnesota.
