You may not have heard of Q10 before, so consider this your crash course in one of the smartest ingredients in modern skin care. “CoQ10 or Q10 is short for coenzyme 10 and it is also known as ubiquinone or vitamin Q,” explains Dendy Engelman, MD. “CoQ10 is an oil-based vitamin substance that is found in the mitochondria (our cell’s energy centers) and it is also an antioxidant involved a number of biological functions, including helping to produce energy, neutralizing free radicals, and keeping cells both inside the body and in the skin healthy.”

The popular dietary supplement ubiquinone, also known as Coenzyme Q10, is widely believed to function as an antioxidant, protecting cells against damage from free radicals. But a new study in Nature Communications finds that ubiquinone is not a crucial antioxidant—and that consuming it is unlikely to provide any benefit. Ubiquinone is a lipid-like substance found naturally in all cells of the body. Cells need it to produce energy from nutrients and oxygen—a function performed by tiny structures, known as mitochondria, within cells. Because it was also thought to function as an antioxidant, ubiquinone has been recommended for a variety of ills and as an anti-aging supplement; global sales of the substance are estimated to amount to hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

As a fertility doctor, I tell patients that CoQ10 appears to be safe, although it has not been proven to be effective with any rigorous scientific research.Vitamin and mineral supplements are very popular. They can also be very expensive. It is important to know which vitamins are really necessary for good health before investing. According to a new article from the American Medical Association, 52 per cent of adults use at least one, and 10 per cent use four, different supplement products. As a fertility doctor, I see a lot of patients who want to try everything possible to improve their odds of pregnancy. For many women, this involves taking extra vitamins and minerals. The standard recommendations for a woman preparing for pregnancy are: folic acid (at least 0.4mg per day) and vitamin D (at least 800 IU per day.) Women who do not get enough iron or calcium from their diet may also be advised to supplement these minerals.
