Patients with both heart failure and type 2 diabetes who are treated with a metformin-based strategy have a lower mortality risk than matched individuals not treated with anti-diabetic drugs, new findings suggest. “Our findings bolster prior observational studies demonstrating that diabetic heart failure patients using metformin have better outcomes,” said Finlay A. McAlister, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Epidemiology Coordinating and Research (Epicore) Center at the University of Alberta in Calgary.

Diabetes Insipidus (DI) is a disorder in which there is an abnormal increase in urine output, fluid intake and often thirst. It causes symptoms such as urinary frequency, nocturia (frequent awakening at night to urinate) or enuresis (involuntary urination during sleep or "bedwetting"). Urine output is increased because it is not concentrated normally. Consequently, instead of being a yellow color, the urine is pale, colorless or watery in appearance and the measured concentration (osmolality or specific gravity) is low.

Three-fourths of patients with type 2 diabetes were able to stop taking medications six months after undergoing bariatric surgery -- and almost 85% no longer needed drug treatment at two years cutting their healthcare costs, according to a review of health insurance records. The analysis of insurance claims data for more than 2,200 adults with type 2 diabetes who underwent bariatric surgery found that despite the $30,000 median price tag for the procedure and hospitalization the surgery also saved money in the long run, Martin A. Makary, MD, of Johns Hopkins, and co-authors reported.

Hundreds of people turned out on the first day of spring with a little spring in their step to help fight diabetes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk marked its second year in Volusia County Saturday, and it has grown both in participants and the amount of money raised. Renee Bergin, who began the Daytona Beach walk, said she saw a need for it locally after her own daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. “All for those kids, we have to do it for them, because they can’t do it, themselves,” Bergin said. “Everybody wants to help.

‘Moderate alcohol intake prevents weight gains’

Women are often advised to stop drinking to avoid extra calories but a new research suggests that women who regularly consume moderate amounts of alcohol are 30 per cent less likely to gain weight than those who do not drink. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston said the women who consumed two to three servings of beer or wine each day were less likely to gain extra pounds as they get older. The 13-year research found that women who did not drink at all gained the most weight.

Women Who Consume Alcohol Gain Less Weight: Study

A study recently released by the Archives of Internal Medicine shows that initially normal-weight women who consumed a light to moderate amount of alcohol gained less weight than their abstaining counterparts. Researchers charted the drinking habits of 19,220 American women "aged 38.9 years or older who were free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes mellitus and had a baseline body mass index within the normal range of 18.5 to less than 25" over the course of 13 years.

Bowersox is expected to make it back to perform for viewers tonight. Fox network will not disclose the exact cause of Crystal Bowersox's hospital admittance. The network has only said Bowersox has "medical issues which would prevent" her from performing on Tuesday night.
